Silves Cathedral
Silves Cathedral – A Testament to the Gothic Legacy of the Algarve
The Silves Cathedral (Sé de Silves) is one of the most significant Gothic monuments in the Algarve. Built in the 13th century after the Christian reconquest, it stands on the site of a former mosque and is mainly constructed with red sandstone. The main altar and side chapels contain fine examples of sacred art and carved stone tombs, including that of Dom João II’s daughter, Princess Beatrice.
Featuring Gothic architecture with later Baroque and Manueline touches, the cathedral has three naves, pointed arches, and historic tombs. It remains an active church and a key attraction in the historic town of Silves.
