Silves Castle
Silves Castle (Castelo de Silves)
Silves Castle is one of the best-preserved Moorish fortifications in Portugal and a prominent historical landmark in the Algarve region. Located in the town of Silves, it sits atop a hill offering panoramic views of the surrounding countryside and the Arade River.
Built during the Islamic occupation of the Iberian Peninsula, between the 8th and 13th centuries, the castle served as a key military and administrative center for the Moors. Its red sandstone walls, towers, and battlements are striking examples of Islamic military architecture. The castle was later captured by Christian forces during the Reconquista in the 13th century.
Visitors can explore its massive walls, walk along the ramparts, and visit the inner courtyard, which features an ancient underground cistern and remains of former structures. The site also offers a small archaeological museum with artifacts from different periods of occupation.
Silves Castle is a symbol of the town’s rich and diverse history, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and anyone exploring the Algarve.
