Lagos Museum Dr. José Formosinho – A Treasure of Algarve’s Past
The Lagos Museum Dr. José Formosinho, founded in 1930 by historian and collector José Formosinho, is one of the Algarve’s most important cultural institutions. Its diverse collections span archaeology, ethnography, numismatics, natural history, and sacred art, showcasing the region’s rich heritage from prehistoric times to the modern era.
A highlight is the adjoining Church of St. Anthony, whose interior is a masterpiece of Portuguese baroque, adorned with intricate gilded woodwork, azulejos, and religious sculptures. Visitors can also explore maritime artifacts reflecting Lagos’s historic role during the Age of Discoveries.
More than a museum, it is a journey through centuries of culture, faith, and seafaring tradition in southern Portugal.
