Basilica of the Holy Trinity
Basilica of the Holy Trinity – Modern Spiritual Architecture in Fátima
The Basilica of the Holy Trinity (Basílica da Santíssima Trindade) is a striking example of contemporary sacred architecture located within the Sanctuary of Fátima. Inaugurated in 2007, it was built to accommodate the growing number of pilgrims visiting Fátima each year, with a seating capacity of over 8,600 people, making it one of the largest Catholic churches in the world.
Designed by Greek architect Alexandros Tombazis, the basilica features a minimalist, circular structure, symbolising unity, equality, and the eternal nature of God. Its interior is bathed in natural light and adorned with powerful works of sacred art, including a monumental golden mosaic by Marko Ivan Rupnik, which spans the sanctuary wall behind the altar.
The basilica also contains 13 chapels, several confessionals, and wide open spaces for reflection and prayer. Despite its modern design, it complements the spiritual atmosphere of Fátima, offering pilgrims a peaceful and contemplative space within the sanctuary grounds.
